First Coast News
This is a band that is the very ideal of what a professional band is all about. If you were to open a musical Who's Who, there would be a picture of The Joys album Unfold next to the words...band that has it all together. This male/female combo is a super sharp, highly refined and ridiculously tight unit that is so skillful and adept that it's amazing that they're not the hugest band in the Great White North. That being said, Unfold sounds like it was pieced together precisely by a team of German physicists and engineers hell-bent on designing the perfect alt-rock album.

The Joys - Unfold

Wow, what a voice!! Frontwoman SARAH SMITH from THE JOYS (former
POPJOY) has the "balls" of JANIS JOPLIN, the rough parts in the voice
of M. ETHERIDGE and that together with fine music from the 70ties. You
get the sound of the earlier HEART, but you even hear parts from FREE
or BOSTON out of the tracks from the band from Toronto. In Canada they
are well known and loved for their marathons of live gigs. This
experience is recognizable in the authenticity of their songs which
are rough and dirty, but never seem to be old-fashioned. What I like
most: the opener "Soul On The Sleeve", "Fly" (the guitar reminds me of
an AC/DC ballad), the funky "Come Alive" and especially the wonderful
ballad "Unfold" where the powerful voice of SARAH seems suddenly so
vulnerable and even though she blasts me off with an incredible high
tone, which hits me into every bone and causes cozy goosebumps. A fine
finish for a perfect blues/rock album!

The Joys - Unfold
Review by Mike Bax for Fazer magazine

Based out of London Ontario, The Joys bring a hard rocking sampling of
1970's influenced rock out in every track on their new Unfold CD.
Saying they riff off of Heart's older material is selling the band too
short. Sure, there's some Wilson sisters influence going on, but
tonnes of bands out there can easily wear that mantle. What The Joys
seem to have in spades, is a love of classic rock, and the ability to
channel their good and bad life experiences into clever songs, and
then take them on the road (the band play an average of 200 live shows
a year). Need a little more help? Try playing tracks like 'Storm',
'Keep Tryin' To Try' and 'Unfold' - all heartfelt ramblers that hint
at a vision that belies their current small Canadian band status.
